Two US market regulators fall to three commissioners as bitcoin heads for its best September on record
Good morning. The biggest story of the day was not a price move but an emptying of chairs. Cointelegraph reported that seven commissioner seats across the SEC and CFTC would be vacant after Friday following a key resignation, leaving only a few leaders to oversee aspects of the $3 trillion crypto industry. The thinning of both agencies lands as the rest of the market accelerates, and it raises a simple question for every reader: who is minding the shop.
Congress, at least, is still asking questions. The Block reported that Comer pressed Crypto.com, Hyperliquid and PredictIt for records on identity checks and suspicious trades, in an expanded probe seeking material on government insiders, employee trades and suspicious activity referrals.
The market itself was quiet at the close. Bitcoin finished at $83,640.10, up 0.19% on the day, with a market capitalisation of $1.68 trillion. Ether slipped 0.39% to $2,677.38. The mood underneath was less settled. Decrypt reported that bitcoin was up 7.33% in September, edging past 2024 as the best September on record with one day left. Cointelegraph reported that bitcoin failed to make another run at $85,000 as long-term holder supply kept that level out of reach, and that surging US bond yields weighed on stocks and precious metals. The Block reported that CryptoQuant sees a near-term correction as possible, with short-term traders' onchain unrealized profit margin at a 21-month high.
Money kept arriving through funds. Decrypt reported bitcoin ETFs extended their inflow streak to eight straight days on Monday, adding $2.95 billion over 30 days. Both Decrypt and Cointelegraph reported Bitwise launched the first US spot NEAR ETF on NYSE Arca; Cointelegraph put the token's monthly rally at more than 160%.
Traditional finance moved onchain in parallel. Decrypt and CoinDesk reported Cboe's renewed S&P deal opens the door to tokenized options through 2051, while Cointelegraph reported Kakaopay Securities is working with Dinari and Ondo Finance to explore tokenized Korean equities. CoinDesk reported Robinhood is adding AI agents, perps and weekend trading. Decrypt reported Aztec Labs relaunched its self-custodial zk.money wallet for private stablecoin payments.
What to watch: the regulatory vacuum, the ETF streak, and whether profit-taking turns into the correction CryptoQuant flagged.
Zoom out: Glassnode reported bitcoin trading near $84k after a week that closed about 4% higher, with ETF inflows carrying the gain while perpetual traders and profit-takers sold into it.
